Frontline of the Pandemic
By Patricia Skehan

Although we are all seekers of the truth, only those who experience an event truly understand the reality behind the scenes. As I transcribed dozens of extraordinary letters written by young volunteer nurse, Jean, to her famous mother author Ethel Turner, during the 1919 Spanish flu epidemic, I glimpsed that hidden reality.

Jean’s letters reveal the reasons why doctors, nurses, and other frontline workers shielded us from the truths of the pandemic, revealing her heart-wrenching life-and-death struggle within the emergency hospital, and making for sobering reading.

In reports and memories found in our national archives, the resilience of survivors and the selfless dedication of frontline workers to saving them shone through, illuminating an incredible side of our humanity, to the strength and spirit that lies within each of us.

Their camaraderie became lifelines of strength and solidarity in the face of overwhelming odds, a testimony to the spirit and empathy that defines our humanity. We must listen to the lessons that history teaches.
